COURSE/SUBJECT TITLE: Language Arts
LENGTH OF TIME: Full Year (60/65 minutes every day)
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Glencoe Literature Course One forms the core of the reading curriculum for sixth-grade language arts. The anthology integrates fiction and nonfiction texts and engages students in reading, writing, speaking and listening activities. An independent reading program is also a component of language arts for 6th graders; students are required to respond in writing to the books they are reading independently. Supplemental reading materials such as novels, poetry, short stories, textbooks, and magazines are also read.
The writing curriculum for 6th graders involves a process approach, beginning with prewriting and moving through the stages of drafting, conferencing, revising, and editing to bring their writing to final copy quality. The 6+1 Traits philosophy is used, based on the belief that six key qualities define strong writing. Those qualities are ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation. These six key qualities are used to teach writing, to assess writing, and to teach students to assess their own writing.
In 6th grade, the major focus is on ideas and organization
The skills of listening and speaking are integrated into the study of reading and writing.
