LENGTH OF TIME: One quarter (60/65 minutes every day)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Art in 6th grade continues to introduce and identify the design principles and elements through various art projects.  Students are encouraged to apply creative-thinking skills to express themselves while developing an understanding of various tools, techniques and processes in art.  The units covered are:

UNIT #4: Clay Sculpture

UNIT #5:  Printmaking

ESSENTIAL OUTCOMES:

REPORTING STANDARD: Historical and cultural context

  1. Students will develop basic understanding of the 1960's Optic art movement and how it impacted society/lifestyle.

  2. Students will recognize the characteristics of the Surrealist art movement.

REPORTING STANDARD: Techniques and processes

  1. Students will identify use of color schemes, value gradient, value differences, contrast between hues and other compositional features in artwork.

  2. Students will identify primary, secondary, intermediate colors and complementary color pairs.

  3. Students will accurately mix colors to create a color wheel.

  4. Students will accurately mix black and white to colors to create tint, tone and shade scales.

  5. Students will understand how artists create visual vibration and illusion of movement.

  6. Students will create texture and pattern in clay by using multiple tools and techniques and demonstrate successful techniques and procedures to construct a functional clay form.

  7. Students will recognize the different properties of glaze and how it changes in the firing process.

  8. Students will correctly identify and use printmaking tools and demonstrate successful techniques and procedures required to create a print.

  9. Students will be able to correctly sign, number, and mount prints.

  10. Students will demonstrate basic photo skills using a digital camera and will demonstrate basic understanding of tools to manipulate digital photos in Photoshop Elements.

  11. Students will demonstrate successful tooling techniques and procedures to create raised surfaces or lettering in aluminum or copper sheet metal.

  12. Students will demonstrate different techniques on metal to create varied decorative metal effects such as antique finishes, matted finishes, high luster, and color.

REPORTING STANDARD: Creative expression

  1. Students will demonstrate personality traits and interests in their artwork to develop personal style.

  2. Students will demonstrate creative ideas using various media to create an original Op Art composition.

  3. Students will communicate creative ideas using clay, printmaking, computer technology and metal to create an original work of art.

  4. Students will analyze the application of the printing process to vary outcomes of prints.

  5. Students will communicate creative ideas with texture, patterns, lettering and/or personal designs in sheet metal to create an original work of art.

REPORTING STANDARD: Reflection and critique process

  1. Students will analyze and evaluate student interpretations of value scale assignment through observation and group discussion.

  2. Students will analyze and evaluate varied Op Art compositions by artists Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely.

  3. Students will select and prepare a work of art to articulate an artistic justification for their selection.

  4. Students will apply problem solving and creative thinking skills to improve or vary their own personal artwork.

  5. Students will critique their finished artwork and identify design elements and principles used.

COURSE/SUBJECT TITLE: General Music

GRADE LEVEL: 6th

LENGTH OF TIME: One Quarter (60/65 minutes every other day)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Sixth grade general music will involve students continuing to have a kinesthetic musical experience.  They make music, listen, move, and read/ write each class.  Students will work on musical vocabulary and basic music theory.  Students continue to sing and play rhythm instruments.  In this class they will be exposed to acoustic guitar.  Students will work in small groups on a song project.  Students will demonstrate all of the skills that they have worked on throughout the term on a final project.  Emphasis in 6th grade is on American literature.

ESSENTIAL OUTCOMES:

REPORTING STANDARD: Listening and Movement

  1. Students will identify and demonstrate the following rhythms: quarter note, eighth note, quarter rest, half note, half rest, sixteenth notes, and syncopated eighth note and quarter note patterns.

  2. Students will be able to recognize songs through solfege and the qualities/ relationship between major and minor modalities.  Students will be able to describe major and minor chords.

  3. Students will actively listen and evaluate a variety of music using musical language, description, and eurhythmics.  Students will also be able to assess themselves and others on the musical elements.

REPORTING STANDARD: Literacy

  1. Students will understand and demonstrate the solfege scale up and down with hand signs in both major and minor keys.

  2. Students will be able to analyze musical elements within songs.  This will include elements such as: tempo, dynamics, form, and modality.

REPORTING STANDARD: Creating and making music

  1. Students will be able to play rhythm instruments on a varied repertoire of music in unison, rounds, partner songs, and ostinatos.

  2. Students will identify and read a guitar chord chart, understand the parts of the instrument, and be able to identify in writing all parts, string names, and handling the instrument with care.

  3. Students will play 2-3 guitar chords in rhythm with proper posture, fingering, and care.  Students will be able to sing and play the instrument simultaneously in small groups.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The sixth grade FCS class focuses on safe food practices, basic preparation techniques, and, includes a food pyramid review. A simple hand-sewing project is constructed. All FCS classes provide opportunities for students to learn practical life skills that improve the well being of individuals and families. The units covered are:
